Breaking News….We have another State Title winning sports team at GWSC this year! Our ‘Intermediate Girls’ Table Tennis team recently travelled to MSAC Stadiums and took out the 2025 ‘School Sport Victoria’ Intermediate Girls Table Tennis State Championship for the second year in succession.
Congratulations to Ariel Li, Chloe Yu, Fei Fei Du, Phoebe Leong, Ariah Rajeswaran and Ameya Nambiar on your amazing athletic achievement! It has indeed been a ‘long’, but ‘strong’, season of ‘pong’ at Glenny this year….with our ‘Senior Girls’, ‘Senior Boys’ and now ‘Intermediate Girls’ teams all taking out their respective ‘SSV’ State Table Tennis titles! Our Intermediate Girls had to win their way through the Waverley Division and then the Eastern Metropolitan Region Finals in order to qualify for the ‘SSV’ State Championships. Amazingly, they didn’t drop a single game, set or match all the way through the Division and Region Finals, an astonishing run which continued during the State Finals….
We drew Chairo Christian School (Leongatha) in the first round of the State Final qualifiers and they proved to be a tricky adversary. After four victories in the singles, our doubles pairings then finished the match with a couple of convincing wins. In the second round of qualifying, we came up against Bayside P-12 College and again rapidly secured all four singles and both doubles encounters. Our final qualifying match was against Nossal High School, with another 6-0 victory for GWSC securing our spot in the cross-over State Semi-Final as the number one seed from Pool A.
As the second seeded team in Pool B, The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School team were pitted against our GWSC girls in the first State Semi-Final. Our streak of perfect matches continued, with all four of our singles players winning their ties 3 sets to nil, then our doubles pairings repeating this scoreline in both of their matches. It was incredible to see the deft touch, power, placement and angles that our GWSC girls used against their opponents to secure their wins. This dominant victory set up a State Final showdown with Bayside P-12 College. In a repeat of our qualifying match, our Glenny girls were far too strong for their opponents. We won all four singles matches in straight sets and then our doubles duos did the same to clinch the State title! Our student coaches also stood up, rallying our team together and stressing the importance of never giving up, playing out every point and believing in one another through to the very end of the match. At the conclusion of the State final, our players and student coaches all graciously lined up next to the table to shake hands with their opponents and offer them three cheers and congratulations on a fantastic final!
During her victory speech at the medal presentation, our captain Ariel made special mention of our dedicated team of student coaches and thanked Natalie Trinh, Yashvi Shah, Queenie Su, Lucas Lum, Vinh Vuong, Leo Zheng and Eric Lin for all their time and efforts supporting the team in 2025. Ariel also gave a shout out to the two staff supervisors of this team, Miss Amy Wollmann and Mr Mark Robinson, who supervised and ran 16 training sessions across two terms to prepare this team for the State Championships. Fellow team mates then also chipped in and said that the nutrition station, high performance cushioned socks and ‘victory’ wristbands that Miss Wollmann and Mr Robinson provided the team with were second to none and gave our team the edge over their fellow competitors once more this year.
Kudos again to our victorious GWSC ‘Intermediate Girls’ Table Tennis Team who are the 2025 ‘School Sport Victoria’ State Champions!
#PongStrong!
Cheers,
Mr Mark Robinson.
