Debating is an extra-curricular activity currently offered at Glen Waverley Secondary College. GWSC competes in the Debating Association of Victoria competition, which is the largest debating competition in the world! This competition is open to students in years 9 to 12. Our students compete against students from public and private schools in the Glen Waverley Region.
In addition to the competition, students in years 7 to 9 can also participate in training and practice sessions run at the school, and friendly debates between school teams.
Debating is a very rewarding activity. In general, participating in debating helps build student understanding of their identity, and develops skills that are useful for many school subjects and future careers. There are many benefits to being involved, which include:
Students participate in regular training sessions before the debates, to talk about the issues involved, work out how they will structure their arguments, and practise their speeches. Students also get plenty of help from their debating coaches, and their peers. Examples of topics that students have debated in the past include:
In 2023, We have also introduced a senior debating club, which takes place every Wednesday during senior lunch. Students in the club participate in round table sessions, impromptu speeches, and prepared speeches. This club is run by students, and is a great opportunity to develop leadership skills.
