History has been made by two GWSC teams in the ‘Open Division’ of the 2024 Badminton Victoria ‘All Schools’ State Championships. Our ‘Senior Girls’ secured the bronze medal in the ‘Open Girls Division’, whilst our ‘Senior Boys’ won the ‘Ken Coleman Perpetual Trophy’ in the ‘Open Boys Division’.
Our ‘Senior Girls’ team of Dorothy Liang (Year 9), Cynthia Luangsirirangsee (Year 9), Natalie Trinh (Year 10), Shirin Khanna (Year 11), Tiffany Du (Year 11) and Sarah Ung (Year 11) were our first ever girls’ team to contest the ‘Open Division’ of this statewide competition and also the very first GWSC girls team to win a medal in this prestigious ‘All Schools’ tournament. They won their first three preliminary matches against Wesley College, Werribee Secondary College and Sacred Heart College. They then faced East Doncaster Secondary College in their final preliminary round fixture, which turned out to be a thrilling contest. Unfortunately, our Glenny girls went down 3-2 against EDSC, which resulted in them being relegated to the bronze medal play-off match against The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School. History was made though, when our GWSC ‘Senior Girls’ team won the bronze medal at the 2024 ‘Badminton Victoria’ All Schools ‘Open Division’ State Championships, with a 4-1 victory over The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School. Special shout-out to three amazing student coaches - Nicholas Ung (Year 9), Yuhao Shen (Year 10) and Ivan Cheng (Year 11) - who expertly guided and supported our ‘Senior Girls’ team throughout this state competition.
Congratulations to Jamie Zhu (Year 9), Nicholas Ung (Year 9), Yuhao Shen (Year 10), Justin Lim (Year 12), Adrian Aw (Year 12) and Adam Zhu (Year 12) who came together to form our gold medal winning, ‘All Schools’ State Champion ‘Senior Boys’ Badminton team. Together they faced some serious competition with many Victorian and Australian representative players competing in the ‘All Schools’ championships, which were open to all public and private schools from across the state. During the Qualifying Rounds, our boys took on and clinically defeated teams from Bacchus Marsh Grammar School, Maribyrnong Sports Academy, Braybrook College and Camberwell Grammar School. This resulted in GWSC finishing top of Group A and qualifying for the Grand Final against East Doncaster Secondary College.
All of our players held their nerve in some stunning rallies and hard fought games, in three singles and two doubles contests, to clinch the Grand Final four rubbers to one in favour of Glenny. This is the very first time that a GWSC team have won the ‘Ken Coleman Perpetual Trophy’ for the 'Open Boys' Division of the ‘All Schools’ State Badminton Championships. This ‘Open Division’ win at State ‘All Schools’, along with our victories in both the School Sport Victoria ‘Inter Mixed’ and ‘Senior Mixed’ State Badminton competitions, secures our position as the best Senior Badminton program in Victoria. Huge shout-out to our amazing student coaches - Dorothy Liang (Year 9) and Natalie Trinh (Year 10) - who expertly coached and supported our 'Senior Boys' teams throughout the entirety of these State competitions.
Both of these GWSC 2024 Badminton Victoria ‘All Schools’ State Championship teams represented themselves and our College so very well both on and off the court. They were humble in victory, respected all officials and opponents at all times, supported one another and fellow players from other teams in the correct manner, whilst also playing some beautiful badminton which displayed their power, finesse, speed, agility and mental fortitude. Kudos to you all on being amazing badminton players and coaches, but more importantly amazing people!
Special thanks to Mr Mark Robinson, Mrs Carla Gagliardi and Glenny Alumni coach Ellyce Trinh for training and coaching our ‘Senior’ Badminton representative teams in the lead up to the ‘All Schools’ State Championships. Kudos also to Mr John Healy and Mr Mitchell van Dijk who accompanied our badminton teams to MSAC for their respective tournaments, where they provided continued support and encouragement to both of our medal winning teams. Thank-you also to Mr Robinson for his assistance in entering our representative badminton teams into the state tournament and handling all of the registration paperwork!
