Breaking News…..Glenny sports teams break down stereotypes and break through barriers for brilliant victories at States….Congratulations to our 2024 State Champions - ‘Intermediate Mixed’ Badminton Team and also our ‘Intermediate Mixed’ Badminton Team
We had three teams competing in ‘School Sport Victoria’ State Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Wednesday the 14th of August, 2024; who all represented our College so very well.
Our ‘Senior Girls’ Table Tennis Team (Ameya, Ariah, Jahnavi, Pihu, Prabhani & Sulagna) had strong wins against Mernda Hills Christian College and Copperfield College to progress through to the State Semi-Final against Brentwood Secondary College. Our girls went down bravely in six tightly contested sets to Brentwood, who were the eventual winner of the State Final for Senior Girls Table Tennis.
Our ‘Intermediate Mixed’ Badminton Team (Ashton, Dorothy, Jamie, Nicholas, Raghav & Zixuan) recorded convincing victories over Greater Shepparton Secondary College, Maribyrnong Sports Academy and Leongatha Secondary College during the pool stages to move into a State Semi-Final. We easily accounted for Reservoir College to qualify for the State Grand Final, where our Intermediate ‘Mixed’ team would again take on Maribyrnong Sports Academy. With drive, determination and an unrelentless desire on doing their darndest to help the team, our super six are now officially the 2024 ‘School Sport Victoria’ Intermediate Boys/Mixed Badminton State Champions! Amazingly, this is the third State Badminton Championship in a row for all members of this incredible team!
Our ‘Senior Mixed’ Table Tennis Team (Bohan, Carly, Leo, Lucas, Ryan, Vinh & Yuhan) also started the day strongly with lightning fast victories over Lowanna College, Melbourne High School and Suzanne Cory High School to qualify for the knockout phase of the competition. In their Semi Final against Nossal High School, our team showed everyone else how we can #Pongstrong! They then faced an imposing Ilim College in the Grand Final. After securing two rubbers each, the title would be decided by the double’s pairings. Although the doubles ‘W’s were split, the chief umpire’s decision was final when the total points scored by each team were added up and GWSC were declared the 2024 ‘School Sport Victoria’ Senior Boys/Mixed Table Tennis Champions! Incredibly, this is the third State Table Tennis Championship in a row for both Yuhan and Carly!
#MomentOfPride – It was terrific to see that GWSC were the only school to enter and qualify ‘Mixed’ teams (consisting of both girls and boys) for the 2024 ‘SSV’ State Championships in both badminton and table tennis. Our girls and boys all played equally important roles within their respective teams, demonstrating how both of these sports can be played at a very high level by both male and female participants.
Massive shout-out and thanks to our incredible student coaches – Adam, Sarah, Ivan & Yuhao (Intermediate Badminton) and Chloe, Christina & Fei Fei (Senior Table Tennis). You all supported our dual State Championship winning sides so very well throughout their ten week training programs and also during their respective Division, Regional and State competitions.
A huge THANK-YOU also to Miss Ellyce Trinh, our awesome Glenny Alumni Coach, and our Glenny ‘GOOD’minton team mascot, Pinkachu! Our badminton program at GWSC would not be where it is today without the ongoing encouragement, positivity and care that you both share with all members of our terrific teams! Thanks also for the amazing brownies and choc chip cookies too, they were delicious as always and kept our energy levels up all day!
Kudos also to Mrs Carla Gagliardi (Badminton), Mr Ben Crossett (Table Tennis), Mr Nathan Oakes (Table Tennis) and Mr Mark Robinson (Badminton & Table Tennis) who all helped supervise our teams at training and also on the day of the ‘SSV’ State Championships, whilst also barracking for #TeamGlenny throughout each hard-fought match.
#Glenny‘GOOD’minton!
