'BACK-2-BACK' Table Tennis State Titles

Congratulations to our GWSC Intermediate (Years 9 & 10) Girls table tennis team who won BACK-2-BACK State Titles by taking out the 2023 ‘School Sport Victoria’ STATE Table Tennis Championships, which were recently contested at MSAC Stadiums in Albert Park.

Winning a State Championship in any field or discipline is no easy feat……whilst defending your title is an even tougher task to complete…..Those who are successful in doing so experience a feeling so sweet, that just can’t be beat, as they then also have the unique opportunity to take out a ‘Three-peat’…….

So #GWSCommunity, please hop out of your seat, stand up on two feet and join me in congratulating an elite group of Glenny athlete who know how to compete, withstand the heat and absolutely dominate on the score sheet…..

Kudos to our GWSC Intermediate (Years 9 & 10) Girls table tennis team who were victorious in the 2023 ‘School Sport Victoria’ STATE Table Tennis Championships. This is the second consecutive year that GWSC have won this prestigious State Title, which is an absolutely amazing achievement from a very determined, talented and strong group of incredible young women…. 

Congratulations to Yuhan Li, Carly Jiang, Yashvi Shah, Natalie Trinh, Amirah Hisham and Prabhani Wijetunge, who together played some exceptionally consistent, powerful and inventive table tennis during the pool games, semi-final and final of the Intermediate Girls ‘SSV’ State Championship. Our Glenny girls did not drop a match all day as they swept past quality opponents from all across Victoria, including Suzanne Cory High School,  St. Thomas Aquinas College (Tynong), Catherine McAuley College, East Doncaster Secondary College and The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School. With a mix of deft touch, pure power, amazing angles and dogged determination, our Intermediate Girls were able to secure Glenny ‘BACK-2-BACK’ State Titles in table tennis!

Special mention to Chloe Chen who was also an integral member of our Intermediate Girls Table Tennis Team this year, but was unfortunately unable to compete in the 2023 State Championships as she was on a 3-day hike as part of her Year 9 Outdoor Education program. Thank-you Chloe for helping our team qualify for the State Titles by assisting our Intermediate Girls team to win both the Waverley Division and Eastern Metropolitan Region table tennis championships. We wouldn’t have won State without your help mate!

Special thanks also to our student coaches – Jerry Luo, Ryan Be, Lucas Lum, Adam Zhu, Juan Kim, Kevin Che and Kevin Phan – who expertly guided our Intermediate Girls team through ten intensive training sessions under the table tennis tutelage of Mr Crossett and Mr Robinson. They also helped to coach, motivate and barrack for our team as they progressed through the ‘SSV’ Waverley Division, Eastern Metropolitan Region and Victorian State Table Tennis Championships. It was awesome to observe our student coaches working so closely with our representative players, continually supporting and assisting them during each and every training session and game, whilst they also helped out with umpiring and scoring when required to do so during these tournaments.

We can’t wait to see the evolution of this new GWSC sporting dynasty, when our Intermediate Girls attempt to take out a trifecta of State Table Tennis Titles in 2024!
