Vimani Jayawantha, Nat. AFLW Championships

Congratulations to Vimani Jayawantha on her selection in the Australian U16 Medleys Representative AFLW Team, who recently played in the 2021 National AFLW Championships!

Vimani was selected to play for the Australian Medleys AFLW Team, following her outstanding showing for the Victorian ‘All Nations’ team. This was a fantastic effort from Vimani as there were only six multicultural players from Victoria selected in this national representative team. Vimani was involved in a week-long, high-performance camp over the holidays, as part of this elite pathways program for women's footy, where she was guided by coaches and players from both the AFLW and AFL.

This program was designed to not only develop Vimani’s AFL skills and footy IQ, but also provide her with opportunities to make her way into the AFL’s leading talent pathway for youth players, the NAB League. Vimani also had the opportunity to participate in a special AFLW Media Day at Marvel Stadium, as well as having access to specialised fitness testing and programs, health and wellbeing sessions, in addition to high profile mentors from the AFLW and AFL.

Vimani competed fiercely in a series of hard-fought matches throughout the National AFLW Championships, helping out her team immensely through the use of her silky skills with the Sherrin and also her tenacious tackling. Vimani represented herself, her family and her culture with great pride throughout the championships, earning the respect of fellow players, coaches and supporters from all of the competing teams.

Vimani has been an integral part of our ‘GWSC GIANTS’ AFL program over the past four years, representing GWSC in multiple Victorian Multicultural Cup, AFL Unity Cup and School Sport Victoria AFL competitions. It has been amazing to witness Vimani’s rapid development within our GIANTS AFL program and we wish her all the best in her future footy endeavours! We look forward to following Vimani’s journey and continued success, both within our ‘GWSC GIANTS’ AFL programs and hopefully one day in the AFLW!

Kudos to you Vimani, keep kicking goals for women’s footy and sport!
