"Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life."  (Nelson Mandela)

In the spirit of becoming pioneers of social justice, Glen Waverley Secondary College celebrated, Poverty Awareness Week (‘PAW’) 2017. It was a spectacular event marked by numerous activities and heartfelt compassion for people who continue to live below the poverty line, despite the continual development of the world. The week allowed numerous students to be educated about the true impacts of poverty and shaped their understanding of an ever growing issue. The dedicated ‘PAW’ committee, accompanied by Mr Robinson, Ms Mathews and Ms Loke, sought to ignite a passion for fighting poverty within our school community.

As it has for the last three years, Live Below the Line played a significant role in ‘PAW’ as it allowed students and teachers alike to truly connect with the issue of poverty by living on just $2 a day. With a team of over 100 students and staff, who thus far have raised $18,421, GWSC has been able to impact the lives of many underprivileged children in the Asia Pacific region.
