GWSCnews - Principal's Report - Issue 5 2012

I would like to welcome back all our students and families to Term 3. In particular, I hope our Year 12 students are well rested in preparation for the final semester of their studies. It is a time to consolidate their knowledge and understanding across their areas of study and work conscientiously over the next few months to achieve their own personal best.

Our Principal, Gerry Schiller, is currently on long service leave enjoying a well deserved break but will be returning at the beginning of week 4 refreshed and ready to tackle the year ahead. In the meantime, I am happy to help students and parents in any way I can, as are Assistant Principals Colin Warner and Vin Penso.

This has been the week of our College production, Avenue Q. The students, under the direction of Karl McNamara, spent numerous hours in rehearsals and the final product was brilliant. I hope all College members had the opportunity to spend a thoroughly enjoyable evening watching our highly talented performers recreate this puppet extravaganza.

Congratulations to all the cast and crew and especially to Karl on another outstanding production.

I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize the achievements of one of our outstanding Year 9 Maths students, Alex G, who was one of six Australian students invited to participate in the International Maths Olympiad in Argentina over the term break and achieved a bronze medal in this prestigious event. An outstanding achievement especially considering he was by far Australia's youngest participant.

Over the next few weeks all eyes will be on the London Olympics and while there will be great interest in all events we will, in particular, be closely watching the efforts of one of our past student, Jenna O'Hea, as she competes with Australian women's basketball team. To recognise the efforts and achievements of all our athletes, the Health and PE faculty are organising Olympic Theme activities in which students and staff will be encouraged to actively participate in coming weeks.

As we head into Term 3, I hope that all students are fully engaged in their studies, while still enjoying the array of extracurricular activities on offer. For most students, now is the time to start selecting subjects and planning for next year's courses, so it is imperative that students do their best to achieve the results of which they are capable and enable entry into their preferred subjects. Good luck for the term ahead.
