Shakespeare Without Tears 2012

As is tradition, the Year 10s of Glen Waverley Secondary College are studying Shakespeare’s timeless classic, "Romeo and Juliet", a touching tale of two star-cross'd lovers who are determined to be together till the end of time, beyond their conflicting families’ wishes.

Many of us lacked inspiration, we couldn’t find the deep running emotion that was scribbled in what seemed to be a "foreign-eth language – eth".

On the 10th of May, the Year 10s were treated to an up close and personal performance of the play, presented by the Flying Bookworm Theatre Company’s, Julie and Elijah.

The duo took a different and interesting approach to the play, dissecting its different parts and performing them, although it wasn’t all as confusing as reading the text.

First Elijah performed a one-man run through of the entire play in three minutes. Yes, one man! Without the "O"s and "yonder windows", we were able to grasp a clear summary of the play in a simple explanation.

Throughout the two period show, the actors explained to us each of the scenes that they performed. They shared with the audience their interpretation of the scenes, which was a valuable aid to understanding what was going on.

Audience involvement was one of the focal points of the performance; it was entertaining to see our fellow classmates take to the stage and participate in selected scenes. Or maybe we just found satisfaction in their humiliation?

Throughout the play we investigated different characters and themes, gaining a greater understanding of the storyline and Shakespeare’s language. One memorable scene I recall was the dialogue between Juliet and Lord Capulet. In this scene, Juliet expresses her lack of interest in marrying Count Paris. Her father, appalled by her protest, was induced into a blood-curdling rage. The actors portrayed this scene so professionally, that a pin drop could be heard between the silence of the maddened screams. The performance as a whole was truly captivating.

Overall, the performance of "Romeo and Juliet" by the Flying Bookworm Theatre Company was exceptional. Their portrayal of the events in the play was expertly suited to the audience and allowed us to take an in-depth look into Shakespeare’s world. Never a dull moment!
