How do I view a PDF file?

PDF files are very convenient, if you have the right software.

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a way for publishers to convert a file into a format that can be read without the need for the program that the original file was created in.

For example, if a document is created in Microsoft Publisher, and the end-user does not have Publisher installed on their computer, they will probably not be able to open the document. They make be able to open the document using some other program, but it will not look the same as the publisher intended.

Also, files created in programs such as Microsoft Word can be quite large, especially if they have embedded picture files. It is inconvenient to download a file that is 10Mb in size just because the author has included a lot of fancy clip art pictures.

PDF overcomes these problems to a certain degree.

If you have installed the free PDF Reader available from Adobe, you will be able to open any document created in any program and transformed into PDF by the publisher.

Also, PDF can greatly reduce file size through the way that it encodes the information in the document.

The Free Acrobat Reader

This free reader from the originators of the PDF system allows you to easily open and view PDF files.

Foxit Reader

If you wish to annotate or bookmark your PDF documents, you will need a reader program such as Foxit.

Foxit is available as a free download, and the program can be installed to a USB thumbdrive, allowing you to take your PDF library with you, so you can read your PDF files on any Windows computer.

Make your own PDF files

The latest version of Microsoft Office will allow you to create PDF files from your own documents. Open Office is available free to download (though note that it is a large download) and it allows you to make PDF files also.
